I get knocked down, but I get up again

No, the snake did not eat me. I did stop running shortly after the prior blog entry, though. Now, months and pounds later, I am back. Earlier this week I brushed the cobwebs off my running shoes, replaced the batteries in my headlamp, and hit the street at 4:30 AM for a new round of C25K. I seem to be caught in some sort of temporal loop: This makes - what - four times now I've graduated from the program only to stop running shortly thereafter and restart from the beginning months later? At least I know that I have the ability to complete the program and that it works for me. Two months from now, I'll be about 25 pounds lighter and more fit all around, if all goes according to plan.

  1. Dan, so pleased you've got back up and running again. I myself have had one awful, awful year personally and would love to start running again but have lost the motivation. I hope to gain some from watching your progress.

    Keep going, my man.

  2. Hey Dan,

I've been checking in on your blog periodically for quite some time now. I found it when I myself first started C25K, way back in November 2007, and I really enjoyed reading your posts at the time as I was going through my own C25K experience.

Anyway, I certainly haven't been a model of consistency since then, but I did manage to progress to racing 5Ks and then 10Ks and then my first half marathon and finally full marathon (I just finished the Disney marathon in January of this year.) I took several months off after finishing the marathon because I was so drained, but am just now getting back into running again!

The point of this somewhat rambling comment is to make a suggestion I thought you may find helpful: have you ever considered entering a race? I find that I do best when I have a race to train for. I've tried being the kind of runner that can just sustain going out for 30 minutes 3 times a week (or whatever) but personally, it doesn't work for me. I have to have a goal in mind. Just an idea, maybe that will help you in your future C25K adventures (and beyond.)

    Good luck! :)

  3. Thank you! And thank you for following along. I've definitely been in a bit of a health-slump of late, but I've been starting to feel the call of the road a bit, too. Maybe registering for a race is exactly what I need to do - it'd give me a definite goal to strive toward and a deadline to keep. I'm in awe that you've done a marathon now. If I get to that point, the Disney one is definitely the one I'd like to do.

    Have read your post.

Continue running, aim high and finish the race.

  5. Hi Dan,

I just discovered your blog while I was searching for 'how to make your own c25k playlist,' since the last time I tried to do C25k, I immediately gave up because I didn't like the music on Robert Ullrey's playlist. So, I found your instructions and took a look at your blog. You seem really similar to me, in this temporal loop pattern of running and quitting. I noticed your last post was almost exactly a year ago, and I just wanted to say that if, like me, you've been in the unhealthy blah low-momentum winter mode, you should get back in the game! Your blog really inspired me. I'm going to go for run #1 tomorrow.

    Thanks :)
    Susanna

  6. I hope Run #1 went well for you, Susanna. In answer to your question I'm not currently running though I have no really good excuse why not. I need to get some new running shoes and get out there.

  7. Hi Dan,
Found your site via a google search as I am mid-way through my first C25k program.

I'd love to pick your brains sometime.
You mentioned 25lbs in 2 months - is that typical for you when doing C25k or do you have some additional stuff going on?

I'll be sure check back in - good luck and thanks for maintaining the site!

( I'm tracking my program here:
